Oregano is a very popular culinary herb widely used in Palestinian, Greek, Spanish, Italian, Turkish, Syrian, Portuguese and Latin American cuisine. The oregano leaves are often used in cooking and the dried herb is more flavourful than the fresh ones.
Oregano rubbed is often used in tomato sauces, grilled meat and fried vegetables. Together with basil, it contributes much to the distinctive character of many Italian dishes. The dish that is most commonly associated with oregano is the Italian Pizza. Oregano also combines very well with pickled capers, olives and lovage leaves and works very well with spicy foods.
In fact, Oregano was even used as an antiseptic as well as a medical cure for respiratory and stomach ailments in ancient times.
